Now Pike gets thrown into the fire for Panthers

Sometimes it really is too soon to feed a young quarterback to the wolves.

But third-string quarterback and rookie Tony Pike gets to take the reins of a feeble offense against a seething Ravens team on Sunday. Jimmy Claussen is concussed, so his hazing takes a brief hiatus.

The problem for Pike is, this is likely a brief stint under center, so tossing him into the fire is a dangerous proposition. Rookies don’t all need to be groomed the same way, and some are more fortunate than others when it comes to starting from Day 1 (see Sam Bradford).

But as we mention Bradford, a number one pick, it’s not fair to compare him to Pike, a sixth-rounder on a rebuilding team. Unfortunately, coach John Fox has no other options, so another wacky experiment begins.

What’s the worst that could happen?
