Holy parity, the Chiefs are the last of the unbeatens

Isn’t it almost unfathomable that after four weeks of the NFL season, there is only one unbeaten left? Isn’t it even more shocking that it’s the Kansas City Chiefs?

While doing a feature story for the Herald, I happened to speak to Larry Seiple, the punter on the 1972 Miami Dolphins. They, of course, are still the only team to go through an entire regular and postseason unscathed.

Seiple shared his thoughts on how the Colts misplayed things last year by choosing health over possible perfection, something that surprised me considering I was always under the assumption that those guys all sat around and popped champagne when the last team loses its first game (turns out only a handful of them, like Shula and Kiick, actually do that).

His thoughts on whether the 3-0 Chiefs can make a run at history?

“Stranger things have happened,” he told me.

Well, no one is really expecting that, especially considering KC gets to travel to Indy this week to take on a ticked-off Colts team. But the bottom line in all this is that even with the uncapped year upon us, and labor uncertainty and a proposterous expanded-season looming, the competitive balance is stronger than ever.

Wish we could say the same about baseball, but Roy Halladay made it evident that a new dynasty is being born right in front of our very eyes in Philadelphia.
